USAA Van Conversion Insurance: What Military Families Actually Get

USAA covers factory Class B motorhomes but not DIY van conversions. What their RV product includes and better alternatives for military van builders.

USAA is the default insurance carrier for military families, and its reputation for competitive rates and strong customer service is well-earned on standard vehicles. For van conversions, the picture is more complicated than most van life forums suggest.

USAA does not directly underwrite RV policies. It refers RV insurance quotes to partner carriers — primarily Progressive and Foremost Insurance Group (a Farmers subsidiary). This means the coverage you get through USAA for a van conversion depends on what those partner carriers will write, not on USAA’s own underwriting.

For factory-built Class B motorhomes — Winnebago Revel, Storyteller Overland, Thor Sequence, and similar units — the USAA-to-Progressive pipeline works. Progressive covers these vehicles under its standard RV product. For DIY van conversions, the path is less reliable.

The DIY Conversion Problem

Owner reports indicate that Progressive-via-USAA has declined to cover DIY van conversions. On Sprinter-Source, a Washington-based owner reported that Progressive, when referred through USAA, declined “conversions unless they come converted new.”

This is notable because Progressive’s own RV product has covered DIY van conversions directly since November 2023. Whether the USAA referral pipeline now routes DIY conversion inquiries to Progressive’s updated product — or whether it still filters them out — is not clear from available reports. If you are USAA-eligible and building a DIY conversion, it is worth calling to check, but have a backup plan ready.

Custom Equipment Cap: $5,000

USAA’s auto insurance product includes custom equipment coverage capped at $5,000 with no option to increase it. For a converted van with $20,000 to $60,000 in installed components, this cap is functionally useless. It covers perhaps the electrical system and nothing else.

This is the single biggest limitation of trying to insure a converted van through USAA’s auto product rather than through a proper RV policy. If USAA’s RV referral pipeline declines your DIY build, and you fall back to carrying the van on USAA’s auto policy, the conversion is almost entirely uninsured.

Pricing Reports

On Sprinter-Source, a USAA member reported that USAA “way more than doubled my auto insurance earlier this year to just under $5,000 for my Sprinter and a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan.” The owner had not found an affordable alternative through USAA and was planning to try retitling as an RV and checking Roamly.

This contradicts the common assumption that USAA always offers the best rates for military families. For non-standard vehicles, USAA’s automated underwriting may price aggressively against the risk it does not understand — resulting in premiums that exceed what specialty carriers charge.

What USAA Does Well

For military families with factory-built Class B motorhomes, USAA’s Progressive referral provides access to Progressive’s full RV product — including full-timer’s coverage, Total Loss Replacement (for vehicles under 5 years old), and all of Progressive’s standard RV endorsements. The multi-policy discount with USAA auto and home can be significant.

USAA’s customer service reputation also means that if something goes wrong during a claim, the support experience is typically better than what you get from a direct Progressive policy.

When USAA Works and When It Does Not

USAA is the right call when:

  • You have a factory-built Class B motorhome (not a DIY conversion)
  • You already have USAA for auto and home, and the multi-policy discount matters
  • You are active duty or a military family member eligible for USAA membership

USAA is the wrong call when:

  • You have a DIY van conversion — the referral pipeline may decline the build
  • Your build value exceeds $5,000 and you are carrying the van on an auto policy
  • You need agreed value coverage on a custom build (Progressive-via-USAA offers Total Loss Replacement or ACV only, not agreed value)

Where to Go Instead

If USAA’s referral pipeline declines your DIY conversion, these carriers have published products for self-built vans:

  • Roamly — Purpose-built for DIY conversions. Agreed value appraisals capture full build value including labor.
  • Progressive (direct) — Try quoting directly through Progressive rather than through the USAA referral. Progressive’s DIY product launched in November 2023 and may not be fully integrated into USAA’s referral flow.
  • Good Sam / National General — Established RV product with agreed value up to $300,000 for custom builds. Not available for Class B in California.
  • State Farm — Agent-dependent, but the most flexible eligibility criteria among major carriers.
